Contemporary Painting 01

The course of "Contemporary Painting" by Kevin Moore provided by AAU is mainly to guide students to understand and explore the historical background of the many inheritance and evolution of American contemporary art creation style from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. This mainly includes: expressionism, stylization, cubism, pop art, surrealism and realism. Although the topics covered are broad and not in-depth, they are eye-opening and breathtaking.

Remember, the lesson plan for the first two or three weeks starts with a discussion of expressionist styles and practical creative exercises. At that time, I was still ignorant and didn't know what I was doing. I am a little skeptical of the definition of "expressionism". Isn't painting a way of expressing emotions and thoughts through "visual techniques"? Does being called expressionism have to be very emotional?

I have to admit that our generation of art creators have more dignity and have basically never experienced the hardships of world wars, industrial revolutions, and economic depression. Unlike the expressionist style of that era, you can always feel the dark, negative, roaring or expressing strong resistance in the works of that period.

On the other hand, the creators of this generation of ours, the world they face seems to be close to a lifestyle of neuroticism, information explosion, environmental protection, technology and the rapid evolution of viruses. Therefore, it can be inferred that the modern expressionist style seems to be more wandering: questioning such a world, disgusting the world, cynical, fragile and other complex emotional expressions.

Fortunately, at the time my daughter Nora promised me that she would be my model. She was at the end of 17 years old and was experiencing the challenge of "growth" transformation. Her facial features are prominent, especially her eyes are big and round, firm and energetic, slightly youthful, lively, rebellious, questioning, bitter, shy, even a bit cynical, beside the blinds, under the afternoon sun. Let me notice these. The subtle expression makes me want to record it through images...

So Nora’s rich expressions became the best muse for me to create oil paintings with "expressionism approach".
